A content-driven web platform built to become the definitive resource for rucking. 74 research-backed articles. 6 interactive tools. A 5-tier gamification system, a club finder with 663+ clubs, automated social, and a self-hosted newsletter on Lettercarry. Initial launch in 3 weeks. Ongoing build.
Rucking, walking with a weighted pack, was blowing up. Reddit threads, scattered blog posts, and military training guides were the only resources. No one had built a proper home for the community. No brand identity, no structured content, no tools. Just a growing audience with nowhere authoritative to go. The goal was the Nerd Fitness of rucking. Approachable, research-backed, gear-obsessed but not military-bro.

Brand Identity
Built to feel earned, not bought.
The brand needed to feel like it belonged on a trail marker, not a lifestyle blog. Earthy, grounded, no-nonsense. The sage palette says "outdoors." The summit orange says "move." The topographic textures and clean serif/sans pairing say "we know what we're talking about." The voice is "Nerdy Coach." Enthusiastic without hype, nerdy without being inaccessible.

Voice & Tone
The "Nerdy Coach" persona.
Every piece of content follows a defined voice: enthusiastic without being hype-y, nerdy without being inaccessible. The site talks like a knowledgeable friend who's done the research so you don't have to.
Research-first, never "we tested"
Content is positioned as thorough research and analysis, not firsthand product testing. Claims reference exercise physiology research and manufacturer specs through dedicated ResearchNote components. Never fabricated testing methodology.
"We broke down the specs, cross-referenced user reviews, and compared real-world performance data to find the best options at every price point."
Bylined as the team, not a person
All articles are attributed to "Ruck Authority Team." Building brand authority over personal authority. The site is the expert, not an individual personality.
"Our team analyzed load carriage research from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning to build the weight calculator's recommendations."
Design Decisions
What made it work.
Research-first content
Articles reference exercise physiology research and manufacturer specifications through 147+ ResearchNote callouts. No fabricated testing claims. The information architecture organizes content into six pillars: gear, guides, training, injuries, weight loss, and lifestyle. Each pillar has a dedicated landing page that structures chapters into progressive learning paths. Dark mode, site-wide search, and a custom links page round out the reading experience.
Tools replace static advice
Instead of writing "carry 10% of your body weight" and calling it a day, we built five personalized tools. The weight calculator factors in experience, goals, terrain, and fitness level. The calorie calculator uses MET research data. The program builder generates custom 4-week plans. The gear finder matches recommendations to budget and use case. The injury risk assessment flags problems before they start. Every tool awards Passport XP, and results are shareable via encoded URLs. The tools keep people coming back.
Gamification without accounts
The Ruck Passport is a 5-tier XP system (Weekend Walker through Summit Legend) that rewards reading articles, completing tools, maintaining daily visit streaks, and finishing the 30-Day Challenge. It tracks everything in localStorage. No account required, no friction, no personal data collected. Users earn XP just by engaging with the site, and the badge in the header keeps them coming back.
Community, not just content
The Club Finder maps 663+ rucking clubs with search, state filtering, and community submissions via Supabase. The homepage pulls live posts from r/rucking via Reddit integration. The 30-Day Challenge has a daily check-in tracker with progress sharing.
Trust through transparency
Gear articles include honest trade-offs and budget alternatives alongside premium picks. Affiliate links are disclosed upfront. The brand voice avoids hype and superlatives. The goal is authority, not clicks. That distinction is what builds lasting traffic and trust.
Weekly email running on Lettercarry, joel.design's own newsletter platform, dogfooded for Ruck Authority. Scroll-triggered signup at 75% article depth. Giveaway campaign drives subscriber growth.
Social Media (Instagram + Facebook)
6-7 posts per week cross-posted via Meta Business Suite. Content pillars: knowledge carousels (40%), trail cards (25%), VS comparisons (15%), gear spotlights (15%), community (5%). Custom 1080x1350 designs.
Giveaway Campaign
GORUCK Basic Rucker 17L giveaway with email-gated entry routed through Lettercarry. Custom landing page with countdown, film grain textures, and social proof. Promoted across Instagram and Facebook.
Ruck Passport (Gamification)
5-tier XP system. Weekend Walker through Summit Legend. Rewards article reads (25 XP), tool completions (50 XP), daily streaks (up to 1,000 XP at 30 days), and challenge progress. All localStorage-based, no account required. Badge displays in the header across every page.
Club Finder
Interactive map and list view of 663+ rucking clubs with search, state filtering, and a community submission form. Supabase backend with approval workflow. ISR revalidation every 5 minutes.
Real-Time Deals Page
Server-rendered deals page with automated price scraping via cron jobs. Hourly revalidation keeps pricing current. Affiliate click tracking across every product link with admin analytics dashboard.
AI-citable from day one
Built for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to find, parse, and cite the work. Structured data on every article, llms.txt at the root, IndexNow pinging on publish. The traffic that follows is the traffic AI search sends, not just SEO backwash.
Admin Panel
11-section admin dashboard: product catalog with health scoring, content management, video library, media uploads, link health checker, AI-powered issue detection and auto-resolve, SEO and schema auditing, keyword tracking, bulk operations, and full audit logging.
Miles, the AI rucking coach
A retrieval-augmented chatbot trained on every article and tool on the site. Readers can ask specific gear, training, or injury questions and get answers grounded in the article they would have read anyway. Each response cites its sources, so trust never leaves the page. Built on pgvector + Claude.
The mirror that bypassed Meta
Meta silently denylisted the ruckauthority.com domain during a 48-hour account block. Scheduled IG publishes started failing. I shipped a public GitHub mirror as a media-routing layer the same day, sending posts through raw.githubusercontent.com instead. Idempotency guard added by evening so a cron catch-up couldn't double-post. Live the next morning. The mirror is permanent architecture now, not a workaround.
